As we mark this significant milestone, we reflect on five decades of dedication, growth, and impact in the field of addiction treatment. Since our founding in 1975, Northlands has been committed to providing comprehensive, compassionate care to individuals and families affected by addiction.
A Journey of Healing and Hope
Over the past 50 years, Northlands has evolved from a pioneering community-based Organisation into a leading regional Centre for addiction treatment. Our journey has been marked by countless success stories, innovative practices, and a steadfast commitment to reclaim their lives.
We have touched the lives of thousands of individuals, helping them overcome their struggles with addiction and build brighter futures.
Our Milestones
1975:
Northlands Addiction Treatment Centre is founded with a mission to provide effective and compassionate addiction treatment in Northern Ireland, introducing residential treatment programs and family support initiatives.
1970s:
A period of development that involved staff training, establishing a network of wide ranging contacts in the field, organising conference and seminars. 1977 saw the setting up of Northlands Education Team to provide alcohol education for the youth sector and schools.
1980s:
The Centre expands its services, introducing Alcohol Advise Centres, in Strabane, Lisnaskea, Enniskillen, Coleraine and Limavady. These centres liaised with, GP’s, Social Workers, Probations Service and schools in the area and provided an initial point of contact locally for people looking for help.
An Addiction Studies Course devised by Northlands and staff from St. Conal’s Hospital Letterkenny and offered at the University of Ulster, Magee.
Production of the first in-house audio-visual material dealing with issues of alcohol and drug use. These included the prizing-winning The Best Man, as well as No problem, Druglife, and series of six radio programmes.
Northlands launch and awareness campaign centred around its groundbreaking sponsorship of Derry City F.C. Linked with this was the opening of Northlands first town centre office Magazine Street.
1990s:
Northlands continues to grow, integrating new treatment methodologies and expanding its community outreach efforts.
Opening of Northlands City Centre premises at 13 Pump Street housing its Educational Prevention and Training team and administration.
Bayview Terrace; a pilot project providing long-stay rehabilitation programme for those with little or no social support.
Setting up of the Nucleus, an interagency Youth Health Project in the setting of a youth drop-in and entertainment centre.
Opening of new Treatment Centre in 1995 at Shepherds Way, Dungiven Road.
2000s:
Northlands becomes a regional leader in addiction care, known for its innovative approaches and commitment to evidence-based practices and continues to grow, integrating new treatment methodologies and expanding its community outreach efforts.
2020s:
We celebrate 50 years of service, reflecting on our achievements and looking forward to future advancements in addiction treatment.
